Avis DeBrey

Obituary of Avis Collen DeBrey

On February 28, 1932, Avis Coleen Hilderbrand began her 90 year journey on this earth.  She was the 2nd daughter of Belva Jordan and Harold Hilderbrand.  Born in Dacono, Colorado, she grew up with music in her life as her dad played for dances and sometimes had Avis play along with her saxophone.  She went to school in Frederick, Colorado where she knew her future husband, Bob DeBrey, from a young age.  After graduating High School, she married Bob, the love of her life, on December 21, 1951.

Avis worked at Quaker Oats, Co. in the Union Stations in Denver, CO for a time and then Bob and Avis moved to Commerce City.  A few years later she earned her PhT (Putting Hubby Through) certificate when Bob graduated with his teaching degree.  They later moved to Windsor, CO in 1968 where Bob was the High School Basketball Coach.  Avis worked for Kodak Colorado Div. for a few years and then finished her Bachelor degree from UNC.  She later received her Masters degree from CSU.  Avis taught Business Education at Front Range Voc-Tech and was the Business Department Head for many of those years.

Avis and Bob enjoyed camping/fishing trips, traveling by car on vacations, playing card games with friends and family, and working with teenagers through their church.  She started a youth singing group in every church she attended.  The groups sang in churches, at Nursing Homes, and put on programs in the park.  She was an artist of acrylic paintings and, along with her sister, held many art shows.  She played the piano beautifully for church, weddings, and funerals and enjoyed playing piano/organ duets with her daughter.

Avis loved the Lord and faithfully met with Him every morning in her Quiet Time.  She was author and publisher of a monthly newsletter called “Loving Notes” with a distribution of 100+ friends and family.  She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and has now seen Him face-to-face.  She no longer walks with a walker and is enjoying the company of many who have gone before her.

Avis was preceded by her mother, father, and her sister, Phyllis.  She leaves behind Bob, her loving husband, daughter Lynette (Luis) Cota, son Donald, grandson Jeremy (Shawn) Brunner, step-grandson Daniel Cota, and many nieces and nephews and a “special” daughter and son-in-law, Dan and Marilyn Wilson.
