Obituary of Max Lafayette Coopwood Sr.

Max Lafayette Coopwood Sr. passed away on April 28, 2022, at the Berthoud Care and Rehabilitation facility.

Max was born April 28, 1936, in Elmer, Oklahoma, the oldest son of Mary Virginia (Yeldell) Coopwood and John Lafayette Coopwood. At age six the family moved to Southern California. He graduated from Kearney High School and attended San Diego State College where he met his future wife.

In 1955, Max married Helen Boyle in San Diego and lived briefly in Palmdale, California and Detroit, Michigan before settling in Colorado. They were together for more then 66 years. They had three children, Max II, Steven, and Denise.

Max worked as a technical writer for several different companies before hiring on at Hewlett Packard in Loveland, Colorado. He worked at HP for 29 years in the Marketing and Traffic department.

Max loved wood working, kayaking, running, and biking. He was a voracious reader and loved to tell stories. He took the family to tent camping trips for many years before acquiring an old homesteader’s cabin in Wyoming. Together the family rebuilt the log cabin and built an outhouse that was the envy of the ranchers in the area. He was especially proud of those facilities. He loved animals and had a variety of pets. He had several dogs, a prairie dog, and Stormy (the donkey). He and Stormy would enjoy a cup of coffee each morning before heading off to work.

Max is survived by his wife Helen, sons Max II (Tom) and Steven (Gail) and daughter Denise (Alan); grandsons Benjamin and Jackson; brother Paul (Joyce); niece and nephew Maruja and Jon Paul; and cousins Judi Burright Littrell and Betty Cook.

Services will be held on Wednesday May 11, 2022, at Saint John’s the Evangelist Catholic Parish in Loveland, Colorado. The rosary will begin at 10 A.M. and the memorial will begin at 10:30 A.M. with a reception to follows. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made in his name to the Larimer Humane Society.
