Obituary of Frank William Hummel

Frank William Hummel March 11, 1932 – December 23, 2021 This is my self-prepared obituary. I died December 23, 2021 peacefully in my home at the age of 89. I was born on March 11, 1932 in Portland, Indiana to George S. and May Hummel. I moved to Berthoud, CO in 1946 with my parents and brothers Wally, Dick and sister Dee. Korean War Veteran - U.S. Navy. I was called into active duty from the Navy Reserve. I served on active duty during the years 1951, ’52 and ’53 and was Honorably Discharged in 1955. Boot camp was at U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois, Company 999, where I also served as a Color Guard all through basic training. I served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Badoeng Strait CVE116. My duty station was in the forward engine room; my rank was MML3 Petty Officer. My awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Korean War service medal, two Bronze Stars and the United Nations Korea Service medal. I also received the 50th Anniversary Korean War Service medal from the Republic of South Korea. I married my loving wife Janice E. Bernhardt January 23rd 1955 and we had three children Constance L. (Connie), Frank W. III and George S. Hummel. I was self-employed starting in 1954, with my brother Wally in auto repair, auto sales and a 6 acre auto parts salvage yard in Denver until 1974, when I was hired by Denver Public Schools as a Vocational Educator at MYEC in charge of the Welding Dept. I retired from DPS in 1992 at the age of 60. While in the Navy I passed the High School Equivalency test and received a GED Diploma, as well as completing the Armed Forces course in Auto-Mechanics and Advanced Fire-Fighting school. In my early years out of the Navy, I completed welding school and automatic transmission overhaul school. In later years as a teacher of DPS, I completed numerous vocational education courses through Colorado State University. Some of the things I enjoyed at different stages of my life were fishing, water skiing and the mountains where Janice, our children and I built a cabin near Granby and enjoyed it over 30 years. I enjoyed taking the grandkids up to the cabin and on vacations. I also designed and built our home on 5 acres, zoned farming, where I liked raising live-stock. In my retirement years I enjoyed doing numerous projects in my shop, including restoring my 1941 Hupmobile car. I also liked eating out with family and friends in Mom & Pop cafes. Survived by my daughter Connie L. Wilkes and husband Cliff, son George S. and wife Deann, grandson Ryan M. Dardano and Trish Coleman, granddaughter Latisha M. Stechman and husband Matt, and two great-grandsons Taylor A. Dardano and Auston L. Carrion. Preceded in death by my wife Janice of 66 ½ years 2021, my parents, my son Frank W. III 1978, both brothers Wallace 1996 and Richard 2000, sister Dee 2020 and grandson Luke W. Hummel 2006. Please live happy and shed no tears for me. Graveside service will be conducted with military honors at Greenlawn Cemetery in Berthoud CO on Thursday, December 30th at 10:30 a.m. At the families request there will be no reception following services.
