Jerry Shepherd

Obituary of Jerry Lee Shepherd

Jerry Lee Shepherd, 82, an avid sailor and photographer, was pronounced dead on November 2nd at his home in Loveland, CO. Born July 19, 1939, in Holdrege, Nebraska, Jerry was the eldest child of Marvin Victor and Lola Mildred (Russell) Shepherd. He graduated from Waverly High School and attended the University of Nebraska, then found his way to the Denver area where he lived for nearly 50 years. Perhaps his greatest, but biggest unsung contribution, is to the children of Colorado who ride school buses as they are safer due to Jerry's ingenious method of installing retarders (improved braking) that prevents engines and brakes from overheating on steep roads. He worked in the diesel repair industry, although this doesn't begin to define his skills and interests. Jerry had an active mind and was happiest when at the helm of his sailboat, the Lone Eagle, and in the company of his many boating companions. Survivors include four children, Jennet, Christian, Lee and James; six grandchildren and two younger siblings, David and Judy. Marilyn (Russell) Mohling of Broomfield, CO counted him as a favorite cousin and was always there for Jerry. His family is grateful for John Winslow, of Longmont, for his lifelong friendship with Jerry and his countless helpful ways. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Tom. His friends and family gathered to share their fondest stories on Saturday, December 4th, 3 pm at Viegut Funeral Home in Loveland. He is sailing, still.
